DAY NINE - Marfa then Carlsbad

We wake up the next morning and find a new friend. We see him later in the day, and suspect he's following us.

Texan pride.

We arrive at the Chinati Foundation, a contemporary art museum in Marfa based on the ideas of its founder, Donald Judd. The goal of the site is to bring art, architecture, and nature together in order to form a coherent whole. Unfortunately, it's closed on Tuesdays, but the person at the front desk said we could roam around. We're the only ones there. Eerie.

The site consisted of old soldier barracks and ammunition depots for WWII.

For every step we take, at least 10-20 grasshoppers leap out of the way. Some are too fat to leap.

We go pretty far off the beaten path to check out some dilapidated hangers. We stir up a family of wild boars and they stir up our emotions. Matt arms himself with small rocks for the journey back.

On the way out, we talk to some locals and find out that the film "No Country For Old Men" was filmed just outside of Marfa. We poke around a bit more and get the scoop on where some particular scenes were filmed. Looking for a old tree down a country road tests our eyesite.

We finally find it. It's where the "Ultimo Hombre" went to die with his stash of money.

We hop the barb wire fence to investigate. Boman cozies up with the tree.

This place is amazing. The only travelers we see are border patrol trucks.

A Prada Store twenty miles outside Marfa. Originally installed several years ago as a permanent work of art (it was stocked with Prada's 2005 collection, but lacks a working front door) it is now empty due to vandalism. If you see any locals rocking Prada in Marfa, please notify the authorities.

Military vehicles.

The drive between Marfa and Carlsbad is not boring. Here we make way through Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

A look back at Guadalupe. There Will Be Blood was also filmed in this part of the country.

More drive-by scenery.

We arrive at Carlsbad Caverns right as one million Mexican Free-Tail bats swarm out of their home. They move like water across the sky.

We arrive at our first campsite. Very urban, but free wi-fi. I finally get to update the blog. Meanwhile, Boman takes one for the team as he gets soaking wet as the sprinklers turn on in our campsite. He calls the emergency number and exclaims "I am not a happy camper right now!" We stay the night for free.
